If it’s art or architecture—or food, or wine, or beaches—you’re after, look no further than Barcelona. Take in live street performances, Gaudí’s fairytale architecture and open-air markets as you stroll down the famous La Rambla toward the sea, only turning back to remind yourself that you’re teaching in the largest metropolis on the Mediterranean Sea.
Teaching Moments in Barcelona
1) See why Barcelona is an art lover’s dream, where artists like Picasso and Dali flourished outside of the confines of a museum gallery. Sites like Parc Güell and La Sagrada Familia house modernist exhibitions throughout their walls.
2) Discover the best of Barcelona’s Modernist buildings, dominated by architects Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domènech i Montaner. These renowned architectural works are designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and showcase the most original urban park planning and contemporary architecture in the world.
3) Research the history and agriculture of Barcelona or experience it for yourself at La Boqueria, one of the cities largest public markets located at the entrance to La Rambla. Dating as far back as 1217, you can shop alongside local chefs and tourists to identify the freshest produce and seafood in the region.
4) Soccer is the world’s most popular sport, and Barcelona tops the list of the most soccer crazy cities in Europe. FC Barcelona won 2 FIFA Club World Cup titles and is one of the largest soccer clubs in the world. FC Barcelona’s Camp Nou is the largest stadium in Europe, which was a landmark of the 1992 Olympic Games.
